Seattle Storm to be honored at White House Monday for winning 2020 WNBA title

Quarterback Tom Brady and other members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seemed to enjoy their July trip to the White House to meet with President Joe Biden and celebrate their Super Bowl LV triumph from February. 

As noted by The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), no WNBA or NBA team has journeyed to the White House for such an occasion since Barack Obama's last year in office in 2016. That will change Monday, however, when the Seattle Storm will hang with President Biden and others one day after the Storm face the Washington Mystics. 

"I think for a very long time, up until 2016, going to the White House was an honor. It wasn't necessarily political. It was to meet the president of the United States. The person who holds that office acknowledging your team's success," Seattle guard Sue Bird explained in comments while adding that teams making such trips "wasn't political" until conversations "shifted" after Donald Trump was elected. 

"Now that it's back in a place where it's considered an honor and you're recognized by the highest office in the country is exciting, it's fun," Bird continued. "It's not just about meeting the president or hopefully the vice president is there. It's about the whole experience of being in the White House. Having a day that's about your team and celebrating what you've accomplished." 

Seattle swept the Las Vegas Aces in last year's WNBA Finals.
